Grading: Final grade is based on the following four parts.

(a)  10%  Homework assignments.

(b)  20%  Quizes.

(c)  40%  2 midterm exams. Each one is 20%

(d)  30%  Final exam. It covers all material in the semester.

Course Description: Introduction to the mathematical properties of numerical methods and their applications in computational science and engineering. Study and use of numerical methods for solutions of linear systems of equations, non-linear least-squares data fitting, numerical integration of multi dimensional, non-linear equations and systems of initial value ordinary differential equations. We will study primarily chapters 1-7(skip 4) of the B. Bradie textbook listed above. More detail is provided in tentative schedule listed below.

Matlab Information

Matlab is an excellent environment for experimentation in scientific computing. It is not the most efficient environment for large-scale simulations, although with some effort, Matlab can be used in conjunction with C and Fortran routines. Matlab is a product of The Mathworks.
