Abstract:
Matroids and oriented matroids are classically discrete objects capturing the combinatorics of linear independence and the alike. However, there are various geometric and topological objects associated to them, and some geometric/topological problems turn out to be matroidal. In this talk, I will introduce some of these objects, such as toric varieties from matroids and pseudosphere arrangements, and some of my recent works on (oriented) matroids with implications in geometric and topology, including properties of certain torus orbit closures in Grassmannians and real algebraic varieties near tropical limit.
