Abstract:
In symplectic geometry, the Liouville theorem says that the symplectic volume form is preserved by Hamiltonian flows. For a Poisson manifold, the modular class is the topological obstruction to the existence of a volume form invariant under all Hamiltonian vector fields. In this talk, I will begin with a foundational introduction to Poisson geometry, followed by a detailed derivation of the modular class.
