Abstract:
Math majors are usually frustrated when jumping into the job market, since a good knowledge of Math simply cannot be directly converted into cash. As a Math major myself, my old classmates are mostly working in areas such as programming, teaching, actuary, or many other areas in Engineering. Math majors often find themselves lacking in practical money-making skills, and often have less advantage or are less qualified when competing with those who major in money-making subjects. However, Math plays a vital role in various areas of Engineering. Math has many branches and each area of Engineering needs different Math. It turns out that, with appropriate further training, not only can Math majors be as successful as Engineering majors, sometimes they can even do better than Engineering majors in certain areas. Numerous successful mathematicians in the field of Communication Engineering are hard evidences for the following fact: Mastering Math will not only give you good grades. It also paves the way for the success in Communication Engineering. The main objective of my talk is to show that Communication Engineering is an excellent area for Math students and the NTHU Institute of Communication Engineering (NTHU-ICE) is an excellent place to pursue a postgraduate degree. At the end of this talk, the head of NTHU-ICE will also give an introduction to our institute. Evidently we are able to equip Math students with enough professional skills to thrive in Communicatin Engineering as well as in the Industry.
