教育部國家講座系列演講-Vertical distributions of phytoplankton: observations and theories.
Abstract: Phytoplankton are responsible for about a half ofglobal primary
production, and form the basis ofaquatic food webs. In the late 1960s, in
situcontinuous measurements of chlorophyll a (a proxyof phytoplankton
biomass) were invented, andrevealed the ubiquitous existence of
deepchlorophyll maximum (DCM) in the ocean and lakes.Since then, theoretical
and mathematicalecologists have investigated mechanisms thatgenerate DCM
along with other diverse verticalpatterns by analyzing PDEs that describe
verticalvariations of phytoplankton, light, and nutrients. In the talk, I
will introduce historicalbackground and recent theoretical advances of
thesubject including bistablity, chaotic oscillations, and coexistenceof
phytoplankton.
