Graduation Requirements

  Graduate  

Master's Degree Program

• Course Requirements：

Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 credits, with at least 15 credits are earned from the curriculums of this department's graduate school (not including the research dissertation).

*Applicable to students admitted in 2014 fall semester and thereafter Under special circumstances, if students are willing to take less than 15 math department credits, whom shall receive approval from the dissertation adviser and the course committee

• Compulsory Courses：

 Math Group 

1. Real Analysis I
2. Modern Algebra I

 Applied Math Group

1. Real Analysis I
    
2. Ordinary Differential Equation I or Modern Algebra I
    
3. To apply for exemption of a required course (Real Analysis I, Modern Algebra I), students shall pass the exemption exams. Course exemption exams are held on each September.
    
4. Graduate students take a minimum of 2 courses in the first semester of admission (In-service students are except).
    
5. The Dissertation Advisor Agreement Form must be signed by both Dissertation Advisor and Graduate student when a dissertation advisor is chosen.
    
6. Students should observe the university regulations on minimum credits and attendance requirements, period of study, course requirements and exemptions and other related regulations.
    
7. To apply for transferring between Groups students should complete Real Analysis I.
    
8. Graduate students are required to complete 2 semesters of colloquium course within 2 years of admission (applicable to students admitted in 2010 fall semester and thereafter).
    
9. Ordinary Differential Equation I or Modern Algebra I

Doctoral Degree Program

• Course Requirements

1. Doctoral Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 credits of graduated courses offered by this  department (not including research dissertation).
   *Applicable to students admitted in 2014 fall semester and thereafter.
   Under special circumstances, if students are willing to take less than 18 math department credits, whom shall receive approval from the dissertation adviser and the course committee.
    
2. A Student who pursues a doctoral degree directly shall complete a minimum of 30 credits of which 24 credits are earned from curricula of this department’s graduate school.
    
3. All students are required to complete at least 3 courses from different mathematical disciplines. The course section can be found in The Graduate Courses List.
    
4. Doctoral Students are required to complete 2 semesters of colloquium courses within the 1st year of admission (applicable to students admitted in 2007 fall semester and thereafter).

• Teaching Experiences

Doctoral Students are obligated to teach (and assist teach) 2 department' courses.

• Qualifying Exam

1. Qualifying Exams are held in June and December each year. 
2. Test Subjects: select 2 of the followings 
   Real Analysis 
   Complex Analysis
   Algebra & Linear Algebra 
   Ordinary Differential Equation
   Differential Geometry
   Scientific Computation
    
3. Exam is a written test. The passing grade of each test subject is 60 out of 100 points. 
    
4. For each test subject, students can take maximum 4 times.
    
5. Students are required to pass the Qualifying Exams within the first 2 years of admission. 
    
6. An application Form must be submitted 1 month prior to the Qualifying Exams.
    
7.  Students may ask for the scopes of the exam in the Department Office (R711).

• Language Ability

Doctoral Students must fulfill at least 1 of the following language requirements:

1. Achieving a score of 61(total score 120) or a score of 500(total score 700) on TOEFL examination.
    
2. Passing the English Examination organized by NTHU. 
    
3. Achieving an intermediate or advanced level on National English Proficiency Exam. 
    
4. Completing language courses: (choose one of the following options)
   (a) 2 semesters of German
   (b) 2 semesters of French
   (c) Course code LANG 4*****、LANG 5***** with course name “Technical and Scientific English Writing”, “Public Speaking and Presentation”, “English Listening and Oral Training I/II –intermediate”, “Reading and Discussion”, “Journalistic English”. (select 2 courses)

• Research Dissertation Presentation

Doctoral students must give a public English oral presentation on their research dissertation work before having the Oral Defense.

• Doctoral Degree Exam

The oral defense for a PhD degree examination is subject to the Code of Practice for Ph.D. Degree Examination. For detailed information, please refer to http://registra.site.nthu.edu.tw/index.php?Lang=en

1.  These regulations are applicable to graduate students and doctoral students admitted in 2003 fall semester and thereafter.
