Abstract:

Orbital integrals, as a natural generalization of class functions on a finite group, play analogous important roles in the representation theory of p-adic and adelic groups and thus in number theory. An important geometric tool to study them is called affine Springer fibers, which itself also has important applications in representation theory and beyond. After giving a survey of these applications as motivation, we discuss properties of orbital integrals and those of affine Springer fibers, and how results on one side help to furnish results on the other side.
