First we motivate the study of modified Bessel functions, then review their definitions and derive some well-known relations for our later use. Since in this talk we target general audience who has no priori knowledge on the subject, we will go slowly. Near the end of our talk we discuss a geometric variational problem which arises from a study of the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations. The variational problem will use the formula that we have derived.
