History

1962 National Tsing Hua University established the Institute of Mathematics, whose graduate program awarded the Master of Science degree.
1964 The Department of Mathematics was formed, and admitted its first undergraduate students.
1970 The Institute of Mathematics added a program in applied mathematics.
1972 The applied mathematics program formed the Institute of Applied Mathematics, separated from the Institute of Mathematics.
1973 The Department of Mathematics formed two divisions: pure mathematics and applied mathematics.
1974 A special Master of Science program which offered courses in the summer for high school teachers was set up.
1977 A division from the Institute of Applied Mathematics formed a separate graduate program and set up the Institute of Computer Management, which was subsequently transformed into the Department of Computer Science.
1982 The Institute of Mathematics started the doctoral program in pure mathematics.
1986 The Institute of Applied Mathematics started its doctoral program.
1988 The Institute of Statistics was founded and separated from the Institute of Applied Mathematics.
1989 The construction of the Building of Mathematics was completed.
1996 The Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Applied Mathematics merged to form the new Department of Mathematics, which offered undergraduate, master and PhD programs in both pure and applied mathematics.
1998 National Center for Theoretical Sciences was set up and located in the Building of Mathematics.
2012 The Division of Pure Mathematics was renamed to the Division of Mathematics.
