Among the currently available operating systems.
The Unix family (Unix/Linux/FreeBSD) is the choice
for scientific computation.
If you have some knowledge about Unices, you should use
them as your working environment for the programming
works of this course. If you are stuck with MS, then good luck.
- Download the following public domain softwares to
your local hard disk.
- Unzip the file gsv24w32.zip and extract the contents
to a temporary directory, say C:\tmp.
- Put all other files, gs510w32.zip, gs510ini.zip, gs510fn1.zip,
and gs510fn2.zip, to the same directory (C:\tmp).
You don't need to unzip these files.
- Run setup.exe which is extracted from gsv24e32.zip.
During this installation procedure
- Choose English as the default language.
- Choose both Install GSview and
Install Ghostscript from one of the menu.
- Better to use the default directory C:\gstools
as the destination directory.
This will install both GSview and Ghostscript.
- After the installation, run gsview32.exe
(it's under C:\gstools\gsview directory) for the
first time to configure the language (choose English)
and Type 1 fonts directory (you can use the default
C:\psfonts). You only need to do this once, unless
you want to change the configuration later. After the
configure, you may exit the program.
- Start Netscape Navigator,
- Select "Edit", then "Preferences...". A panel
window will show up.
- Under the Navigator, select "Application".
- Find "Postscript" from the application list
and "Edit" it. Or choose "New Type" if Postscript
is not on the list.
- Then specify the following information properly.
Description: Postscript
File Extension: ps, eps
MIME Type: application/gsview
Application: C:\gstools\gsview\gsview32.exe
- Press OK after done.
The procedure for Internet Explore is similar.
- You may delete all the source files from the temporary
directory (C:\tmp).
- Now you are done! Next time when you click on link
which is Postscript format, a
question panel will show up, select "Open it". The
browser will invoke GSview to display the content
of the file to your screen.
