Grading: Homework assignment for both paper-and-pen and programming will be distributed weekly to bi-weekly. Possible Midterm and/or Final exams (only if the homeworks are not well done).

Course description: This course is continuation of Numerical Analysis I. Prior knowledge in Numerical Analysis I (or equivalent courses) and basic programming are necessary. Topics in Numerical Analysis II will include

Introduction: Why solve A x = b? (where do the problems come from?)
Chap 06: Direct Methods for Solving Linear Systems (continue)
Chap 07: Iterative Techniques in Matrix Algebra
Chap 09: Approximating Eigenvalues
Chap 10: Numerical Solutions of Nonlinear Systems of Equations
Either Chap 05: Initial Value Problems for ODE, or Chap 08: Approximating Theory (if time permits).

Matlab Information

Matlab is an excellent environment for experimentation in scientific computing. It is not the most efficient environment for large-scale simulations, although with some effort, Matlab can be used in conjunction with C and Fortran routines. Matlab is a product of The Mathworks.
